A rainy day in spring is suitable for reading; a rainy day in summer is suitable for playing chess, a rainy day in autumn is suitable for going over things in the trunks or in the attic; and a rainy day in winter is suitable for drinking .

Rain here today, so we stay in bed for what feels like a decadent amount of time. I phone my mother and we talk for a good while. I take a visit to our local animal rescue store and buy an armload of books for reading some other wet day. I make sourdough … two small loaves, one for us and one for Nic’s parents. We talk. We read. We make loose plans for tomorrow.
