Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not. It is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what you can and can’t control that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness become possible.
– Taken from The Art of Living by Epictetus

five and a half years on the island and this place can still surprise me. the familiar woven with the discovery of something new. a sense of wellbeing and tranquility burrows under my skin as i go about the small things that make up my saturday: a trip to a local flower shed for some deep crimson blooms, the grocer, the burger van. a spontaneous visit to the new hope shop resulting in a good second-hand shopping day with a handful of new books, once of which i’m halfway through already. as i’m sitting here reflecting on the day that’s been, i can’t help but marvel at the ease and flow of events from today and the ordinary sweetness of the moments shared when friends paid us an impromptu visit. here we are. nothing much has happened and everything has happened. and all of it was sweet.
