nothing much happened (03)

(observational notes of exquisitely ordinary moments)

something that surprised me

there was a fabulously dressed elderly woman standing on a bench in britomart square being photographed around 1pm today. the abstract-face-print felted hat, the bright orange blazer and the pleated check shirt had me enamoured. i wonder what the shoot was for and whether i might ever see her again, memorialised in print or on screen.

something different

i’m sitting in a hotel room the size of a large walk-in closet writing this. it’s way too hot and it feels like it’s taking forever for the air conditioning to cool things down. 6 hours of my stay will have me glued to my tiny laptop screen as i’m attending a virtual product conference today. the rest of the time, i’ll probably be sleeping. so here I am. sitting in a liminal space in order to catch an early flight in the morning. there’s not much to say about this room. the sheets are clean, the tv has more than a dozen free view channels, the wifi is also free. i’ve already ventured outside to check out my dining options. it mainly consists of overpriced pub or fast food and I find nothing of interest. I buy some sparkling water. It’s almost 3pm. I need to get online soon.

something i’m reading

i discovered a tumblr site that posts lovely poetry. one that particularly moved me recently is this one

how to kill a living thing / eibhlín nic eochaidh

Neglect it
Criticise it to its face
Say how it kills the light
Traps all the rubbish
Bores you with its green

Continually
Harden your heart
Then
Cut it down close
To the root as possible

Forget it
For a week or a month
Return with an axe
Split it with one blow
Insert a stone

To keep the wound wide open.
