the ferryman’s seat, bear gardens, southbank

this is the last surviving example of the boatmen’s seats that once lined the southbank. until 1750 london bridge was the only means of crossing the thames in central london; so “wherrymen” ferried passengers across in narrow water taxis, or “wherries”. the boatmen waited on these rough stone benches until their vessels filled up with rowdy patrons spilling out of the nearby rose and globe theatres, the bear baiting rings and brothels (evocatively known as “stews” because they doubled-up as steam baths).
