aurora

aurora
the aurora australis as seen from waiheke island, may 2024

like many others at the northern and southern ends of the planet, we had to have a go at seeing the massive solar storm. so went out aurora chasing not long after dark, choosing a secluded spot on the island that’s south facing, overlooking the water to the mainland

some of the aurora was visible to the eye and some needed a long(ish) exposure time: depending on the amount of activity, this was between 15 and 30 seconds.

i wonder what the view was like for passengers with window seats on the left side of that plane coming into land

it was such a surreal experience being able to see them just minutes from where we live, after also seeing them last year on rakiura (stewart island)
