in my element

in my element
shelter from the storm. two seats, tucked under the sheltering limbs of a pohutukawa tree, oneroa beach, waiheke island

taking advantage of today's gift of wild and wet weather, i head to oneroa beach for a walk whilst the car is having it's annual warrant of fitness check up in the village. revelling in the grey skies, rain and wild seas, i send a video message to a friend in the uk — because i'm thinking of her, and i'm also trying to entice her to visit someday.

then, since i'm already soaked to the skin, i sit, in this seat right here (pictured above), and phone my best friend. we chat whilst i get wetter, even though i've taken shelter under my small red umbrella.

the gulls i'd startled as i sat to chat, return after a few minutes of me ignoring them. i watch them paddling their feet in the water near my seat, disturbing small insects that they quickly snatch up in their beaks. i think about photographing them too, but decide to sit and enjoy just watching them instead.
