postcards from an off-grid cabin

postcards from an off-grid cabin
the view from the bed in our cabin

i don’t remember how i originally found about about unyoked. probably searching the internet for off-grid cabins or something. originally only available to visit in various parts of australia, they now also have cabins in new zealand, as well as the uk.

last november, nic and i headed out to enjoy a few nights surrounded by different views of nature than the ones we appreciate at home.

tucked neatly into the side of a paddock with million dollar views of the valley below and the hills around us, this tiny unyoked cabin had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. the bed was comfy enough to laze in for hours, and we had a selection of books to read and tapes to listen to (we had field recordings vol. 1 on repeat).

the small kitchen was well equipped for cooking both inside and out, and the firepit was impossible to resist. (ask nic and he’ll tell you i have an annoying obsession with making damper whenever we’re near an open fire. but he always eats it and comes back for more, so i have learned to ignore his mockery and make it anyway.) when it was dark, we ventured back along the track and found a tiny colony of glow worms. it felt like finding treasure.

more nature? yes please.

campfire damper

(makes 4)
  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1-2 cups milk
  • pinch of salt
method
mix all the ingredients together to make a soft dough then divide into 4 pieces
roll out into sausages, then wrap them tightly around your sticks
toast over an open fire until they puff up and look done (crusty on the outside and pillowy soft in the middle)
carefully remove them from the sticks, they’ll be hot, hot, hot.
as soon as they’re cool enough to handle, stuff with butter and jam/honey/peanut butter/golden syrup – basically whatever you fancy.
eat and enjoy!
note: recipe also works with non-dairy alternatives, such as nuttelex and nut milks, and with gluten free SR flour, though you might need to play with the quantities a little to get a mix that you like.

friends and family of mine can get a 15% discount off their first unyoked stay. you'll need to contact me for details (you already know my email address, so i won't be showing it here). there’s cabins in raglan (south of auckland), all over australia and even some just a few hours out of london in the uk.
