9 frames: a drawing experiment

a list of 4 present tense preoccupations

  1. continuing to gather artefacts to add to my island collection:
    1. whale fall, the debut novel of Elizabeth O’Connor, takes us to a remote Welsh island where the life of Manod, a woman longing to escape the confines of her insular community, is transformed by two visiting ethnographers who present an opportunity for freedom and self-discovery.
    2. we were dangerous looks like an interesting new movie. Nellie, Daisy and Lou start a rebellion on a remote island for delinquent girls
    3. a small, scallop shell, the colour of palest pink bubblegum, found on the beach during a walk with a new island friend on tuesday
  2. 9 frames: a drawing experiment: i have never considered myself to be capable of drawing or painting, but my time at singla (and conversations with the other artists), shifted my perception.

naty gently encouraged me to keep it simple, gabriel inspired me with his detailed drawings and to do one small piece of art at the end of each day, and ocean’s playfulness + isobel’s rocks have been incorporated into some of my recent frames.

so, i am creating small boxes containing 9 frames, and putting patterns into each one. a way to shift myself from thinking to doing using a new, contemplative ritual
  3. when staying with friends in london last month, i spied a new (to me) book from the ottolenghi test kitchen, called extra extra good things, on their shelf. flicking through it, i quickly concluded that i would probably make most of the recipes in it, so ordered one for myself.

now we both have a copy, we have decided to cook our way through the recipes together. a way to maintain the food-loving part of our friendship link on opposite sides of the globe.

today i'm making my first recipe from this book: cheesy curried butter beans on toast with pickled onion. (you can also find the recipe here)

Update: It's really delicious. Definitely one to repeat
  4. unsubscribing. i seem to have collected a few too many work-related newsletters and a lot of them contain similar content. i've been cheerfully weeding this part of my digital garden, making space for more creative newsletter subscriptions.

(if you have any favourite creative-themed newsletters that you recommend, please do let me know!)
